When getting links where should you have the links go? Many say your homepage, others say you should go for deeplinks (pages other than your home page). For best results you should probably have a mix. But how can you tell what percentage of your links are deep? Try the Deep Link Ratio tool.

Who Not to Link To

You should always visit your linking partners website to make sure it's something that you want to be associated with. Should your link be on topic ... most of the time the answer is yes. However if you found a website that you really like even if has nothing to do with your website go ahead and link to it, just keep them to a minimum.

Unless you are in any of the sin industries (ie p0rn, gambl1ng, or p1lls) it's a dangerous thing to link to those websites. Generally those industries are highly competitive and are willing to push the edges of what search engines consider acceptable. If they go over the line and incur a ban, you may be guilty by association, so choose who you link to carefully.

Getting Links

Once you've found people who you'd like to link to you need to contact them and establish the link. Visit the site if they have an automatic form that will make things easy, just follow the instructions on the form. If not you will need to send an email to the webmaster. You can usually find the address somewhere on the website. Send an email to them asking if they would like to trade links with you. However you should not be quite so obvious. Mention something you saw on their website that you liked or found interesting. Webmasters are people just like you and it never hurts to stroke their egos. Many people believe you should put up a link to them first in good faith, others disagree. This is a matter of personal opinion and how badly you want to get the incoming link. Depending on how good you are you can get a 30-40% success ratio, but 10-20% is much more common.
